Kindness costs us nothing

We live in a world full of opportunities overflowing with natural beauty, endless experiences, and love.

We live in a world with constant connections, rising bonds, and a desire for more.

We live in a world where we can be anything we want: So why not be kind?

I know. Rose-coloured glasses, right? I'm not pretending everything is cheerful, and I'm all too aware of the many issues and problems facing people all over the globe. That's the thing, though. With the numerous real issues that exist, why do we insist on creating fictitious ones that bare no weight on anyone? Why do we insist on fixating on the smallest of situations and choices of no impact on anyone? Clothes, hair colour, religion, career, sexuality, gender, tattoos, piercings, appearance. Take your pick. There's always something someone feels the need to nitpick or complain about. There's always an endless number of people quick to hurl insults, personal attacks, and lies.

"Don't wear this."

"Don't say that."

"Don't go there."

"Don't do that."

"Don't, don't, don't."

People are so focused on complaining about things that don't matter, they fail to understand or even consider the problems that do exist. Famine, illness, injury, war . . . Racism, sexism, ageism, discrimination, prejudice . . . Bullying, mental health, sexual assault, rape, domestic violence, shootings. . . The list goes on. We could be working together to find solutions to as many as possible, helping each other anyway we can, but instead, we're too busy fighting one another over our individual lifestyle. We invent and imagine situations that never existed.

We are not the same. If we were, there would be no excitement. Nothing to learn, nothing to find out, nothing to discover. Is that not the point of life? To meet new people and try new things? Yet, here we are. Insisting that everyone live their life the way they do, when we should be encouraging one another and helping everyone succeed.

It's not a competition. It's not a race to the finish line. And, finally:

We lose nothing by being kind.
